Housewife-style Herring

So here's a recipe that probably very few people will appreciate: "Matjes nach Hausfrauenart", or filets of herring with apples and onions mixed together in a creamy yogurt-based sauce, served with boiled potatoes or on bread. Most people I know think I'm crazy for eating this on a regular basis.

But I love it. It reminds me of summers with my grandparents. The dressing is creamy, the apples, onions and pickles are crunchy, and the herring is soft and salty - somewhat reminiscent of sushi, in fact.

The best part about this recipe is that it takes only about ten minutes to throw it all together, and it tastes even better the next day and the day after that. That's especially good for me, seeing as I'm the only one in the house eating this dish!

Ingredients

  • 4 herring filets, sliced down the middle and chopped into squares
  • 1 small apple, diced
  • 1 small shallot, diced very finely
  • 6 gherkins, sliced
  • 1/4 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 cup Quark (or sour cream or crème fraîche)
  • 1 tablespoon pickle juice
  • pepper to taste

Mix all the ingredients together. Serve over toasted rye bread (or another kind of dense bread) or with boiled potatoes.
